Ms. Joyal has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and enjoyed a rewarding career in the ICU of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Moved by the educational disparities that she witnessed in the Boston Public School District, she earned an Ed.M in Education Policy & Management from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Within minutes of observing the MEDscience program, she knew she had found something special and her soon-to-be life’s work. Julie’s multi-faceted background in nursing and education, combined with her commitment to the program’s unique mission and pedagogy, position her to make an especially meaningful impact on the HMS MEDscience Program.
Nancy E. Oriol, MD, President & Co-Founder
Dr. Oriol is Former Dean for Students, and current Dean of Community Engagement in Medical Education, Associate Professor of Anaesthesia, and Lecturer on Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her educational innovations include introducing the use of mannequin simulation to the curriculum for medical students and co-founding the HMS MEDscience program to teach science and inspire critical thinking in high school students. Her passion for community service and social entrepreneurship, such as starting Family Van and the HMS MEDscience program, continuously inspires her students and colleagues.
Colby Moore Reilly, PhD, Education Program Lead
Colby received her PhD in Biology from Baylor University in 2014 followed by a postdoc in STEM Education with the Academy for Teaching and Learning. Her experiences have allowed her to teach at the university level, lead teaching workshops, and develop programs to aid graduate students in their transition to faculty member. She is looking forward to engaging Boston area students through hands-on activities that promote critical thinking and problem solving. In addition, MEDscience will allow her the opportunity to develop as a teacher by utilizing the effective pedagogy of problem- based learning.
Uzochi Erlingsson, M.D., Strategy and Development
Uzo is professionally trained as a medical doctor specializing in rare genetic and metabolic disease research. She is skilled in both Lab and Clinical research with a focus on rare biochemical genetic diseases. An Experienced business strategist she is a founding Partner of Haegrun Holdings, an early growth equity and venture fund focused on emerging innovative consumer brands in North America’s clean health industry.
Livia Rizzo, BA, MEDscience Teacher
Livia was a high school science teacher at Boston College High School where she implemented the MEDscience curriculum into her physiology course. She was drawn to MEDscience as she values experiential learning as an effective teaching method to inspire students to enjoy science and explore STEM careers. Furthermore, the pedagogical emphasis on boosting confidence in the classroom and empowering young minds to think critically aligns with Livia’s mission as an educator. Livia’s enthusiastic approach to teaching and interest in medicine pair well together in the MEDscience classroom. Livia graduated from Amherst College with a biology and political science major and has completed all pre-medical coursework.
Gretchen Warland, MLS, DPT, MEDscience Teacher
Dr. Warland received her Masters in Physical Therapy from MGH Institute of Health Professions, in 1998. Gretchen returned to MGH Institute of Health Professions completing her Doctorate in 2012. She draws from her experience as a Physical Therapist, Personal Trainer (American College of Sports Medicine), Yoga instructor, and life long learner to provide unique insights, personal inspiration and meaningful connections to the program’s students. Gretchen is inspired by the HMS MEDscience Program’s mission to provide consequential educational opportunities for all students and to narrow the inspiration gap in STEM education. In 2017, Gretchen earned her teacher’s license in Biology from the state of Massachusetts. She is eager to enhance her teaching skills by employing the program’s impactful pedagogy of problem-based and hands-on learning while creating strong connections with the program’s student population.
Lester Chong, BS, MEDscience Teacher
Lester has been with MEDscience since 2015, when he was first drawn by the program’s hands-on teaching approach and focus on student-driven success. Trained in immunological research with a background in biomimetic protein scaffolds, he is interested in promoting student-driven success through critical thinking and perspective on today’s health issues. Lester earned a degree in Biology from the MCPHS University and is currently completing his Masters in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University.
Mary Kathryn Fallon, CPA, MSA, Financial Associate & Grants Manager
Mary Kathryn Fallon is our financial associate and grants manager. A CPA for the past 21 years, she has extensive experience working with companies in both the medical and non-profit sector. While working as a senior auditor for KPMG LLP, she audited many companies in the healthcare and life sciences lines of business. More recently, she has focused her efforts on many non-profit organizations, including several whose missions promote and support education. Joining the team in November 2013, she is inspired daily about the HMS MEDscience Program and its impact on the youth of our community.
Sally McGorrill Noteware, M.Ed, CAGS, Special Projects
Ms. Noteware has been an involved member of the education field for over 30 years. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated herskills in program evaluation, design and implementation as a Tutorial Program Coordinator at Brookline High School and as Liaison for the 21st Century Fund. Sally first learned of MEDscience when the course debuted at Brookline High School and was an enthusiastic supporter of it’s innovative teaching pedagogy. Her extensive background as a teacher and program coordinator has proven invaluable towards forwarding HMS MEDscience’s mission.
Jonathan Chen, MHA, Program Assistant
Jonathan was formerly the Coordinator of Academic Advising at Regis College. He earned both his master’s degree in Health Administration and his bachelor’s degree in Public Health from Regis College, where he interned for Boston Children’s Hospital and Cambridge Health Alliance. He discovered the HMS MEDscience program and was drawn to the program’s dynamic pedagogy, the positive impact that the program was having on its students, and the HMS MEDscience mission.
Stephanie Kang, MSGH, Teacher Trainer
Stephanie was a clinical research assistant for the ICU at Brigham & Women’s Hospital when she began volunteering for the MEDscience program. As a volunteer, she was able to witness the program’s positive environment and its profound effects on students. Stephanie's passions lie in global health and impacting today's youth to reach their greatest potential. She officially joined the team in Fall 2014 and has experienced various roles in MEDscience in teaching and research. She draws from her experiences in drug development, clinical research, and global health delivery to advance HMS MEDscience's mission. She has a master's degree in global health at Northwestern University and is currently a Doctor of Public Health candidate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Tina Grotzer, Ed.D, Director of Research
Tina Grotzer is an associate professor of education at HGSE, a principal investigator at Harvard Project Zero, and a faculty member at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard School of Public Health. She is a cognitive scientist whose research identifies ways in which understandings about the nature of causality impact our ability to deal with complexity in our world. Dr. Grotzer came to observe HMS MEDscience and found herself compelled to further investigate the unique and impactful pedagogy of MEDscience.
Peggy Campion, RN, M.Ed, Community Partnerships Liaison
Peggy has dedicated over 30 years to a career in nursing, a major focus being health education at the university, high school and primary school levels. Peggy's involvement in the HMS MEDscience program includes volunteering in the simulation lab and participating as a member of the Advisory Board to raise funds and develop collaborative partnerships in the community.
