Program Information:
HMS MEDscience is an innovative high school Biology course immersing students into simulated medical emergencies. Our science curriculum motivates students to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively in teams. We bring classroom learning into the real world with hands-on experiences, giving them the confidence they need to succeed. MEDscience offers semester programming with partner schools, week-long summer programming, and mini-module courses.
*Volunteer applications for the Fall 2024 semester will close on August 30th, 2024. Any applications sent after this date will be considered for the 2025 Spring semester.*
Please note that we currently do not accept high school students as volunteers.

Semester Programs Offered:
MEDscience@HMS (in person): offers high school students a hands-on, active learning environment where they are immersed in realistic, dynamic, simulated medical emergencies. Students learn clinical skills and explore healthcare careers through meeting and working with various medical professionals in the field.
teleMED (online): the virtual (zoom) version of MEDscience@HMS. This online program offers high school students with an online active learning environment where they are immersed in realistic, dynamic, simulated medical emergencies (we are the patients!). Students learn clinical skills at home and explore healthcare careers by hearing from various medical professionals in the field. Volunteers wishing to assist with virtual classes are required to have completed at least one semester of in-person volunteering.
MEDscienceLAB (in person): MEDscienceLAB offers students interested in biotech, biology, or medicine inspiring, immersive, hands-on lab and clinical experience that tie the essential role of research to clinical medicine. Students learn what happens when tests ‘go to the lab’ and how research labs work to solve medical cases.
Duties include: Assisting lead teachers with classroom management, technology mishaps, and student engagement. Acting as a consulting physician through presenting tests to the students and encouraging critical thinking and problem solving. Acting as a patient in our simulated emergency room cases. Mingling with students or leading small group activities to create a sense of camaraderie and safety at MEDscience. Assisting with the setup and breakdown of clinical skills. MEDscienceLAB volunteers assist in the preparation of breakdown of laboratory skills and work closely with students to ensure accuracy and understanding throughout labs.
Time commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week is required, classes available M-F between the hours of 9am-4pm EST. Classes are typically 1:15 hr, however you are expected to arrive at HMS or on zoom at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class and stay on for 15 minutes after. Volunteers will need 30 min-1 hour/week of preparation prior to volunteering.
